Urban Water Sustainability Council

The Urban Water Sustainability Council (UWSC) exists to help usher in the paradigm shift toward green infrastructure and resource recovery for water sustainability. It provides a forum for urban leaders in the fields of water, sustainability, infrastructure, planning, politics and science to meet and share ideas and strategies for creating green, sustainable cities.

Council participants create new ways to improve the urban water environment while building local economic growth and competitiveness and advancing social equity. They meet to share their successes as well as their barriers to progress.

Activities supported by the Council include:

  • Hosting of an annual Urban Water Sustainability Leadership Conference
  • A design competition for green infrastructure (2012)
  • A united voice with other partner organizations to inform stormwater and other urban water regulations and guidelines
  • Forums to allow the easy transfer of knowledge among Council members on local issues of finance, law, policies, practices, regulations and legislation.

The Council resides under the Chairmanship of Kevin Shafer, executive director, Milwaukee Metro Sewerage District. It is guided by an appointed steering committee of Clean Water America Alliance members.*

Water utility leaders who have expressed a commitment to implementing green infrastructure, resource recovery, and/or other sustainable solutions to their local and regional water issues, as well as leaders in related areas (such as urban sustainability directors, city or county environmental or planning directors, commerce leaders) are invited to join.
