Independence Water Pollution Control Director to Head Clean Water Alliance

Independence Water Pollution Control Director Dick Champion has been
named chairman of a newly formed Clean Water America Alliance, a
broad-based non-profit organization aimed at promoting a watershed
approach to improving the nation’s water resources.
The alliance was formed by the National Association of Clean Water
Agencies in Washington, D.C. Champion will serve as chairman for a
three-year term.
Champion, who began his water pollution control career in 1969, has
been with the Independence WPC Department for more than 29 years and
has been director since 1983. The department is responsible for the
sanitary sewer utility, the storm water management program, the
household hazardous waste management program and related
environmental compliance.
Champion is a member of the Jackson County Stormwater Commission,
which was created by the Jackson County Legislature for purposes of
regional stormwater policy, planning, and coordination. Since its
creation in 2001, Champion has been vice-chairman of the commission.
